How Many People Actually Understand This? [Discipline and Patience Rant]

Am still peeling from the sunburn that I got last week while on vacation, but I got a little rant for you today

I posted this pic the other day to my FB page:

And it got me thinking profoundly on what it takes to reach our goals – Both inside & outside the gym

A lot of people know that discipline is required to win, but how many people actually understand this?

It takes maturity & lowering your ego, to submit to the fact that great things take time to accomplish…that you need to be patient

The reward is not always about the end result, like being able to do your first muscle up or hitting a new deadlift PR

The reward simply is the satisfaction & experience from reaching your goal, to look back & know that you conquered blistering obstacles in order to reach something that mattered to you

Nobody can give you this feeling, it is only experienced trough constantly winning small battles & refusing to loose!

We live in a society where most people want the easy way out: the shortcuts

And while they do exist, they never strengthen you internally…they simply make you complaisant with being good enough or doing the least amount of work

Doing this will only make you stay weak & unhappy with yourself – there will always be a hollow hole inside of you that wishes they could work hard & get things done

So think deeply right now:

  • Are you putting all the effort you can to reach the goals that matter to you?
  • or are you just doing the minimum so you can tell people that you are a “hard worker”?

There is a big difference! & while you can fake looking like a hard-worker to other people to some degree, you can’t fake it to yourself!…only you know the real truth!

So if you don’t like how you are acting right now Change it!

Simply Decide to win!,…Decide to work harder, not to please or look good for others…but work harder in order to become a better and stronger you!

To build the character that you respect in others!

And it would be cool that you can just be this persona instantly, but it doesn’t happen that way…you gotta fight battles everyday in order to toughen your skin

Just like with training: you don’t build bigger muscles right away – it takes weeks of constant training, constant breakdown of your muscle fibers & ample recovery for you to get bigger & stronger!

Same principle applies to your character: it takes fighting many battles, feeling like giving up many times & constantly reminding yourself to keep going even tough shit gets hard! …

This is the only way to become the stronger you!

So be patient & don’t think too much about it, just do it!

Stay disciplined to your goals, not because others will say “good job” but because they matter to you!

Your actions will slowly shape who you become, so act like a badass today in order to be a badass tomorrow!

Build what many WISH they Had!

You always hear people making all kinds of excuses as to why they can’t workout (everything from “I have no time” to am “not motivated today”)

And if they are not making excuses, then they are just waiting & wasting time by questioning a lot before they even start with something

They are asking & looking for the best way to start, the best way to eat/workout, how much should you sleep, when should you eat, and all of these details…

Mental Toughness

The truth is that preparation does help, but starting and getting things done will always make you win

Not waiting for perfect situations will toughen up your skin & build a tough mindset that refuses to lose & be average

Is not about being perfect, it’s simply about just doing the damn work (and this is not only true for training but for everything in life)

It’s about being creative & making things happen somehow, regardless of your situation

  • It’s about waking up & doing 100 push ups while your breakfast is cooking, instead wasting your valuable time by looking at non-sense on facebook
  • It’s about walking down the street, seeing a rock & picking it up so you can do 10 squats & 10 overhead presses, even tough you are wearing a suit & tie

In the end you know what you want, so find a way to make it happen even if it is not perfect

You’ll end up building what many wish they had: Mental Toughness

This is something you can read all about…but in the end this is only developed trough constantly taking action & overcoming obstacles!

So go out there today & let knowing stand your way!

Strength Motivation That Will FIRE You Up!

One of the things I love to do in order to keep learning & constantly be motivated to keep trying harder is to listen to others athletes & coaches interviews

There is something about listening to their past struggles that lights up a fire in me and let’s me know that things get hard, and the only way to improve is to keep going & take more risks!

Euphoria, Consistency & The TRUTH!

Hey guys, hope your doing great

I’ve been getting lots of great feedback since I mentioned that I got my first muscle up yesterday…if you wanna see a video of that you can do so here:

One of my facebook fans described the feeling of your first muscle up as euphoria & I completely agree

I wanted to scream like a little girl when I did it, had a big smiling face & felt totally invincible since I conquered this move

So many possibilities have been opened now & I want you to experience the same

Not just with muscle up, but with any movement you are struggling with (even your first push up)

And the only way you will experience this is with consistency

To day in and day out work towards your strength goal & slowly get better every-time, to start feeling in control of the movement & realize everyday that you now are much stronger than last week

When I first started doing handstands I couldn’t walk side to side, I would try but fall right away

These falls motivated me to keep working on this move everyday (doing multiple holds throughout the day)

In about 3 weeks my body got used to to this move, increased my stability, strength & I was able to have more control of this move and do it without falling

All because I keep consistently working on this Bodyweight skill

This same principle applies to other skills & I have also used this to improve my push ups & pull ups

It’s know is not sexy to talk about hard work & having discipline, but there are no shortcuts to getting stronger with bodyweight

You can either do the move or can’t!

So with that said, if you are struggling with any bodyweight move right now, keep working on it everyday & I guarantee you will get better at it!

Live for Today & Get Stronger! [Rant]

Live For Today

Yo guys what is up!…Many people are happy because it’s Friday: they see it as finally the week is over & I can relax

Relax from what?

Life never ends!…whatever job, school or commitment you have that requires you to be there was your decision

You chose to get that job, so if you don’t like it change it! or change your attitude towards it: look at this as an opportunity to grow & learn how to act under stress or in an uncomfortable setting

Like with training nothing ever is comfortable, specially exercises that you suck at but know are essential

Like pull ups, dips, handstands & push ups

Many people can’t do them, and a lot of times is not purely lack of strength, if not because they look at them in a negative way…they don’t understand that getting stronger takes time & there is no magic potion or routine that will transform you in 1 month, what took you 10 years to become

Physical changes can & will occur in a month, but your character doesn’t change that fast

You might gain 5 pounds of muscle, but how does that change you, if you are still the same weak minded & insecure person that you were before training?

A deep change has to happen inside of you & from my experience getting uncomfortable is the only thing that toughens up your character

Uncomfortable things like:

  • Doing workouts that make you doubt whether you can continue or not (like this one)
  • training out in the cold
  • training in the early AM
  • training late in the night or at times when you just don’t want to
  • training with other things besides just barbells & dumbbells

There is never 1 definitive way, but exposing yourself to more roughness will make you tougher mentally & physically

That’s why I stopped purely relying on training for getting bigger muscles: What I always wanted was to become more confident & have the balls to take risks

And the more I train with odd objects, with harder bodyweight skills, heavier weights and overall with new challenges the more I grow & become the person I once didn’t know I wanted to become

Sometimes people tell me, your only 22? ohh man you have your life ahead of you!

Well I do, but I don’t see it that way, I live for the present not the future..I do got my goals & plans, but what matters is what I do right now

  • When I train am fully letting myself be in the moment
  • When I coach somebody they got my full attention
  • When I speak with someone, I am just listening to you & not thinking about another million things

I am focused & living in the moment!

Am i like this every time? Hello no!

Am not perfect by any means & nor will I ever be, but as I become more aware of the way I act, think & behave, I can quickly catch myself becoming nervous, shy, negative, self concious, scared or weak in any form …and quickly kill these emotions & change them to better & stronger ones

It’s all pure self-awareness – nobody can do this for you, only you know yourself & only you can change YOU!

So today is Friday, great, now go out there & live for today! Don’t care about tomorrow or next week…go out & whatever you do be present & have fun!

  • If your gonna workout, give it your all & simply let go of any worries or limitations so you fully emerge in your training session
  • If your gonna go out & party, don’t let any negative comments bring you down – in the end you chose how to feel about yourself, so acknowledge that you got full control of your emotions

Being present is not easy but the more you become aware of yourself & actions the more power you have of making yourself change for the better!

So today might be Friday, but in my eyes is just another day to be myself & Kick Ass!…Live for today & let tomorrow unfold itself in it’s due time,

Crazy Bodyweight Workout & Letting Go of Always Having Order!

2 days ago I hit this bodyweight workout:

And I just let my body do whatever it wanted & just go with the flow

No rules, no order, no set parameters (sets or reps), just completely letting go & doing whatever came out…It was liberating & fun as hell!

I ended up doing tons of:

  • push ups
  • handstands
  • frog stands
  • back bridges
  • dips
  • rolls
  • and a couple of stretches

I did this at my mom’s daycare (which is the living room) and being surrounded by toys & colorful posters made me think back to when I was a kid

I didn’t care about anything, I just moved for the thrill of it

I wasn’t thinking about tempos, which muscles am I working, tracking my rest periods, worrying about proper form, etc

I just went out there to play!

We all have this kid inside of us, but many of us keep it hidden because we have been conditioned to always follow rules & order (at work, school, the gym, etc)

Order & structure is great, specially to really work towards an specific goal, BUT sometimes you gotta stop being so strict & completely let go!

Don’t care about anything & just move for the fun of it

You can hit up a bodyweight workout like I did (which lasted a bit over 2 hours), go to a playground & just play, or next time you are at the gym just play with the weights

Don’t have structure, don’t worry about sets or reps, just let go & be a curious kid again trying different things just because it’s fun!

It will make you exited to train again & will also give you a much needed mental break from always trying to have things in order

I’ll talk more about these freestyle workouts later on, but ever since I’ve started to do them, at least once a week (even if it just for 5-10 min) I’ve revived an energy to train hard again…Feels Awesome!

But that’s it for today, give something like this a try (even if it just for 5 min) and I know you will feel super energized afterwards!

Shit will Get Hard When Your Trying to Reach Your Goals – DON’T STOP! (Here is How!)

Ahh the first Monday of 2013, many people made resolutions & many have already given up on them!…But am sure you haven’t!


I made this video 2 days ago to give you 2 tips that will keep you committed to your goals

#1 – Be the Change that you wanna see:

You need to be certain that what you are doing will work, otherwise your just guessing & will start doubting yourself, which will make you quit when thins get hard

Just know that obstacles will happen & deal with them! …don’t give up or see this a sign that what your doing is wrong…often times when shit gets hard, it means that your on the right path & others it’s test to see whether you really want this or not

Whatever it is, know that if you really want this, you will let nothing stand in your wayThere is no Such Thing as Being too Busy, if you really want something you make time for it!

#2 – Don’t take days off, if you must simply do a little bit:

Skipping a day or saying I’ll do it tomorrow, will put you back where you started, blow your fire off & make you regret & wish that you would have continued the day before

Don’t let this happen to you, instead of taking a break when shit gets hard:

Simply do very simple things

If your routine calls for working out 4 times a week & you can’t follow it exactly as it is outlined 1 day, don’t skip it, instead modify it & simply do less to keep your fire on

Even doing 25 push ups, 25 squats & 10 handstand push ups is better than skipping your whole workout

It might not be perfect or intense as your plan calls for, but that’s fine! the main thing here is that when shit gets hard you don’t quit, you simply modify & simplify to still do something & keep your fire on

And lastly, Don’t try to do it all at once, pick 2 things you wanna change & only commit to doing those

If your goal is to build muscle, then besides training:

  1. eat a lot
  2. & go to sleep early

Simple and effective, instead of focusing on 10 things you can do, simply pick 2 and get to work

You’ll find yourself more focused & once your done with your 2 tasks for your goals you can move onto the others, but at least get your 2 things done (This will make a huge difference!)

That’s it! 2013 is here & many will start off inspired & then give up, don’t do that!

Have your goals & attack them!

know that is not your time or circumstances that matter (those are just BS excuses you make for yourself) – it’s your mindset & desire to change to be someone else that will drive your fire until you reach your goal

Let Nothing Stand in your Way & know that when shit gets hard, it’s just a test to see if you really want this or not

Laugh at the problems, be grateful for them, learn from them & keep moving forward!

Simple Truth About Getting Results: It Takes Hard Work

Everyone wants to get stronger, get bigger & be lean but how many are willing to stop “wanting” and put in the work to achieve this?

Sometimes we need reminders or simple slaps in the face as I call them

Today I got a slap for you to highlight what it takes to really get results:

I found this text while reading the above 1963 old school Health & Strength Magazine

The mention of hard work will put them off immediately, yet it is the only honest answer to their query - Health & Strength Magazine 1963

“HOW MANY times have I replied to the routine query about a middle-age spread and spare tyre. The letters always start something like: “I find I am getting a middle-age spread, could you recommend some exercises to improve my waist, it is now 39in.” About 90 per cent of the people who write these letters are hoping for some magic to rid them in a week what they have taken up to ten years to acquire. The mention of hard work will put them off immediately, yet it is the only honest answer to their query. The paunch doesn’t appear miraculously overnight or from too large of a meal.”

Simple & The Plain ol’ Truth!

The goals you hope to achieve will not happen by doing some special exercise, or worse yet happen fast!

It Takes Hard Work!

Whether you want it or not, that is the only way!

So Stop Looking for Magic & Make things Happen!

Screw Your Limitations & See How Much You Can Do!

I’ve been reading Arnold’s book: Total Recall and it is pure fire!

If you get a chance to read it (or listen to the audio) you’ll see why Arnold was so successful & became the best

The thing I want to talk about today are “Limits on Your Mind”

I posted the picture above on Facebook, but:

On pg 68 Arnold is sharing how him and Franco Columbu were taking turns on doing squats with 500 pounds

Arnold did 6 & then it was Franco’s turn but he only did 4 reps & said he was tired (not too mention that Franco was stronger than Arnold at the Squat as it is stated on the book)

To motivate Franco, Arnold saw a couple of girls walking by and told Franco that they said they did not believe he could squat 500 pounds

Franco loved to show off to girls, so he picked up the weight & did 10 reps!

This was the same Franco that said he was tired 10 minutes ago

Nothing changed except for his MindsetArnold & Franco Squatting

When you set limitations for yourself like this, you put a barrier on how much you can do

You basically conform with doing the average (even if it is incredible for others)

The real growth occurs when you break of from those limitations & let your body go to see how much it can do without setting up a barrier

Am not saying to go out there & do something foolish, but once in a while Fuck the rules!…Ignore your planned reps & sets and just see how much you can do!

You’ll feel how liberating it is to Stop “thinking” & just move the weight, enjoy the feeling and the struggle

It’s tough to do, as we are so conditioned to always think about our next step in order to have everything calculated

And that’s good but sometimes we just gotta let go & free our mind!…We gotta see how much our body can actually do

Give this a try next time, even if it is for just one exercise & I know you will feel an energy that will carry over with you for the whole day making you feel unstoppable!

It might sound like crazy talk, but when you lose sight of these limitations & just enjoy the present, crazy shit can happen!

I am Thankful for the Pain

Before you go smash your face against that delicious turkey like there is no tomorrow

Strugguling to Carry the 200 pound KegI wanna tell you that I am grateful to be able to talk to you

To be able to help & support you on your never ending journey to strength

I would not be able to do this if it wasn’t for my pains, struggles & hardships

All the way from suffering trough horrendous acne in high school to almost breaking my back from doing a clean and press back in college

These are moments that changed me, they gave me a different perspective in life & training

Some have crushed me into depression & some have motivated me to keep moving forward and seek improvement

They have done both, but in the end I can reflect back & use what I have learned from these hardships to improve who I am & help you do the same

Without these struggles I probably would have never taken action to seek help in order to improve my physical & mental self

Life isn’t perfect; you need the struggles, the pains & the hardships to test your strengths

  • Do you keep pushing forward & take action to become stronger?
  • or Do you give up when things get rough?

These are the moments that either break you or make you

And am thankful for them plus the many more to come in the future

Life without hardships would be pretty boring: everything would go perfectly as planned & you would get what you want without ever learning what it is to struggle

In the end it is the battle, the struggles & the suffering that you go trough to reach your goals that makes it worth it

So am thankful for the struggles & the many pains to come

Am grateful to be able to share these experiences with you in order to help you become stronger
